BORN IN 1943? WANT A BIRTH YEAR ROLEX?
If you were born in 1943 and looking for a 'birth year' vintage Rolex your options would be pretty limited, especially if you were looking for something sporty. Most of the pre-war models were very dressy and small (in todays standards). Rolex had already developed the Oyster case system to and had mastered the design of the waterproof case. The just in the early days of their Oyster Perpetual's aka 'bubble backs'. These watches were 'sporty', waterproof and automatic but they were still relatively small. The larger cases of the 'datejust' for example was only launched in 1945.
So what would I choose?
I would take a serious look at the Panerai Mare Nostrum - PAM300. Firstly, when Panerai was commissioned to produce a wristwatch for the Italian Navy in the 1930's they turned to Rolex. Rolex actually supplied them with the cases, movements & crowns for their late 1930's RADIOMIR watches. So the company has a strong tie to Rolex. Secondly, the original 1943 Mare Nostrum was produced in very limited supply just before the allied invasion when production stopped, thus making a 'period' piece outrageously expensive if you could even find one for sale. For that reason, the modern redux of the Mare Nostrum is the perfect solution. The watch was introduced in 2010 at the SIHH show in Switzerland and was limited to 99 pieces, making it still very rare and a solid investment. Thirdly and lastly, this watch is the absolutely beautiful. Sporty and very large (52mm), a classic Naval timepiece. This watch is still quite pricy, approximately $50,000- on the collectors market.
So there you have it ;) In my opinion, a very 'sporty' solution to an early 1940's birth year wristwatch!

VINTAGE ROLEX GMT-MASTER II 'FAT LADY' REF.16760
Super clean watch! Vintage Rolex GMT-Master II, so called 'fat lady' or 'Sophia Loren', ref. 16760. This watch is very rare due the fact that it was only made between 1983-88 and had a case that was 1mm thicker than the standard GMT-Master case, in fact it was the same thickness as the Submariner. Only issued with the 'Coca-Cola' or black/red outer bezel.

VINTAGE ROLEX OYSTER CHRONOGRAPH REF. 6034
Very fine and rare vintage Rolex Oyster Chronograph ref. 6034, circa 1963. This watch comes to me from the original owner and is in 'excellent' original condition. The watch has beautiful cream coloured dial with black & blue printed outer tracks as well as silvered raised hour markers. The dial is in very good 'original' condition showing some very nice 'patina'. The watch is complete with the original 'riveted' Oyster bracelet. Great watch! Don't hesitate to get in touch for details and pricing.

THIS WEEK IN WATCHES & 200TH POST!
Welcome to my first 'Sunday Special' - 'A week in the watch world' blog post. I will be posting these every Sunday so that you can stay informed of what the past week brought in to Knightsbridge HQ and other happenings in the world of horology! I will be choosing and discussing a few of the most exciting pieces to discuss. This also happens to be a very exciting milestone as the 200th post on my blog, which has been up for 5 years already!
Two of my favourite watches that came in to HQ this week were the new Tudor Heritage Black Bay and the super classic 1940's Rolex Prince - Eaton's 1/4 Century Club. Both watches share DNA in the fact that they are both made by Rolex. The 1/4 Century was made for Eaton's by Rolex and the Tudor Watch Company is owned by Rolex.
TUDOR HERITAGE:
-released in 2012
-stainless steel
-retro styling
-41mm case diameter
-self-winding mechanical
-divers sport professional series watch
ROLEX PRINCE - EATON'S 1/4 CENTURY CLUB
-circa 1940's
-14k yellow gold case
-state of the art design for the period
-case diameter 23mm
-18jewel high-grade rectangular mechanical movement by Rolex
-classic dress watch
As you can see, two very different watches. Both with lots of appeal and character. The Tudor at the moment is fetching 'over' list price in the re-sale market due to high demand and short supply. The 1/4 Century has dropped considerably in the last few years as trend has moved to stainless steel sporty models. I believe that the prices of these old gold Rolex Prince watches has bottomed out and consider them to be a very solid 'long-term' performer to any collection. They are under appreciated at the moment; when they come back they will jump fairly quickly and considerably in price given the fact that are still quite rare and beautiful.
They did do a great job on the Tudor. It really has a very solid build quality and looks great on the wrist. It is a watch that can be worn everyday without ever worrying to wind it or keep it dry. A great mix of the modern reliability and retro styling. If you can get one at the list price I believe it will be a watch that will be well worn and not terribly expensive. I don't think it will ever become a 'rare' or 'collectible' watch, if your intention is to buy 'collectible', I advise you to stick the original issue models from the 50/60/70/80's.
Take a look below at a couple of my personal favourite pieces released at the SIHH trade show this past week.
Cartier 'Tortue' - Multi-Time Zones
IWC - Ingenieur Tourbillon
Audemars Piguet - Royal Oak Offshore - Diver Orange
Richard Mille - RM 59-01 'Yohan Blake' aka. 'The Beast' Tourbillon
Limited to 50 pieces - MSRP - $620,000.00

WEEKEND WATCH! HEUER AUTAVIA
I really enjoy wearing this modern (c.2003) TAG Heuer Autavia as a weekend watch. The black NATO nylon strap adds to the already great looking 'retro' style. These watches, although not vintage really make the most of modern day technology and vintage retro styling; make a great 'entry' level watches for any collector or enthusiast. This watch is available for sale, don't hesitate to contact me for more information. It does come complete with the original stainless steel 'rice' bracelet and both, watch and bracelet are in very good condition.
